comments: This writing is in response to ¡°There must be a better way to learn English¡± by Huang Haiying.

Language is a wonderful thing, without it where would we be? We would be lost most certainly.

I am in the New Mexico desert in the United States, and I can relate to how language becomes important.

I have a friend from Wuxi Jiangsu. She lives here in New Mexico accomplishing her studies. I really enjoy speaking with her. She is new to the United States only being here since August of 2004, and I find it so interesting how much she knows in the English language, however like I come to understand from your writing she lacks application of this knowledge and command of the language. Her progress is good though. There are many Chinese students here, and I am beginning to see a large difference in the way that she talks in English as to the way that many of the other Chinese students talk. She does understand simple jokes, and I¡¯m
teaching her lingo that one cannot study.

This exchange though is not unidirectional. She gave me some Hui Shan Mountain clay statues. I have acquired a Chinese name, and learned a few words, and phrases in Chinese. One of the main differences I notice of my friend from Wuxi is that she is not afraid to open up to new people. She is far from home but does not have fear to say hello to someone who more than likely knows nothing about Chinese. This ability to
trade ideas, language and culture, in my opinion has put her ahead of many other foreign students when it comes to the command of the English language.

Throughout the years I¡¯ve learned other languages too and understand the difficulty that there is in doing so. Most of the time it is shyness of saying something wrong that holds people back. Book studies alone cannot help someone get over the fear that keeps them quiet to speak another language. The intention of studying as with many other things in life is very important. It can be seen that memorization, is not comprehension, and this can lead to knowledge that cannot be applied in efficient use.

I especially like the way you said, ¡°Nobody told me that the real meaning of studying another language was communication.¡± Yes communication comes in many forms, because the human being has many senses, and these senses are to be used.

Yours truly,
efra

most people who are not honesty get benefits from their lies. fpr the hones people, thier interests were losy
again and again.

so if we can't change the situation, the honesty is always a cake in the sky. on the other side, many unit pay more attention on the deploma, it's really a deep-sick.

Moreover,FedEx plans to increase the number of Chinese cities to 300. IMF estimated China's economy to expand 7.5% in 2005 after 9% last year, more than double the rate of the US economy. No one would impugn such empirical evidence and the assessment of IMF. Xie

comments: New SAT-Reference for Shanghai folks: the written portion in 25 minutes as the new SAT in March 2005. Sample essay: A sense of happiness and fulfillment, not personal gain,is the best motivation and reward for one's achievements. Expecting a reward of wealth or recognition for achieving a goal can lead to disappointment and frustration. If we want to be happy in what we do in life,we should not seek achievement for the sake of winning wealth and fame. The personal satisfaction of a job well done is its own reward.(Published by the Washington Post,January 16, 2005) I have reason to believe that the above sample essay would be excellent
musings for all readers of Shanghai Star. What is Happiness? Material Consumption over Desire? We must add intellectual pursuit and spiritual satisfaction with good health in order to make our life more meaningful and fulfilling.

comments: Have you ever wondered what other reasons that so many foreign companies come to your country to do
business? It's not just the "potential" of the Chinese and Indian markets, that potential will take decades to realize. It's not just the low wages of your white collar workers or your numerous countrymen employed in sweatshops.
It is the lack of enforcement of environmental and labor laws.

Some of you have been to Europe, N. America and Australia. Ever wondered how we made our countries so clean?
Why our workers use so much company-provided protective gear? It is because of tough labor and environmental laws that are actually enforced.

Only 35 years ago the US experienced the "Love Canal" event in Love Canal, NY. I won't go into details , search for it on Google.
Europe has had similar experiences. At that time there were few or no laws concerning environmental protection on either continent. In 2004 we have, collectively, the cleanest air and water on the planet.
These laws are very irritating to many famous corporations, coming to China and India not only represents access to alot of cheap labor, but the ability to "do business" without having to properly dispose of waste, efficiently use fuel or make safe, high quality products.

1. being paid on time and in the full amount
2. not having large amounts of money deducted by the company for "expenses".
3. safety
4. being able to complain about management without being attacked by security guards.
5. death and injury benefits for workers and their families.
6. form independent unions to handle contract negotiations and protect workers' human and citizen rights.

Someday Chinese and Indian workers can enjoy these rights, but not until they stand up and fight for them.
Blood will be shed, people will die, but if it wasn't for past generations in western countries making the same sacrifices we would be in the same boat.

It is time for all of you to make those foriegn companies fall into line. Stop putting up with this abuse. Opium sales in china forced the Boxer Rebellion, don't you think it is time to rise up against abuse, oppression and poisoning of your land, water and bodies by foreigners looking to exploit your under-developed legal and regulatory system?

Only you can make a difference.

An American friend of the developing world.

comments: A Matter Of Licence?

Recently China's State Adminstration of Radio,Film and Television(SARFT) issued a notice calling all domestic radio and TV stations to postpone the program "China's first advanced night TV program--Mask" made by Beijing Shixi Media Corp. And it asked Beijing Radio, Film and TV Bureau to punish Shixi Media seriously. The reason, the notice said is that Shixi Media has not got the licence to make and run Radio and TV programs. SARFT also emphasized that the subjects of the talk-show programs should be selected according to our political, ethical
and content standards.

The program-"Mask" is the first one in mainland relating to the topic of sex. From this point, it is really historically meaningful. In each issue, there will be a different person invited to tell his or her feelings and maybe problems in their sex experience while wearing differently designed mask. In the end of each
program, the host always tries to persude the guest to remove the mask and always there will be applause.

Therfore, the reason why the program Mask 's debut is postponed seems double-sided: first, Shixi Media does not get a lience; second the program itself appears controversial.

As information flows more freely and people's mind become more and more open, the topic, sex, has no longer been something that nobody dares to touch. The first Chinese Ancient Sex Culture Museum founded by Liu Dalin was opened in Shanghai in 1999 while students on some campues can easily get condoms from vending
machines. However,it still appears reluctant to discuss sex fully and openly in China's mainstream media(especially on TV) just as the sex education is yet underdeveloped and even blank in China. And maybe that is just one of reason why so many immatures turn to some pornographic websites in the excuse of gaining
sex kownledge.

After all, sex is part of life, it is something that almost everybody has to confront and experience-God design it for our human beings'continuity and prosperity, and that is also one of our physiological needs.A hundred years ago Freud claimed that sex was the primary human motive. And Maslow placed it at the bottom of his hierarchical pyramid.(along with hunger, thirst and bodily comforts etc.)He pointed out that only if the deficiency needs are met, is an individual ready to act upon the growth needs. As we are social beings, nothing we do in this society is not connected with social norms, neither is sex.To some extent the average sex view can reflect a people's ethics. But how can we cultivate and form a healthy sex view without getting enough ,right sex knowledge through the formal, open channels? The mainstream media should not be hesitate to
broadcast the positive and healthy programs about sex with a responsible attitude and our educators really need to pay attention to the promotion of sex education.

And I hope it is just a matter of licence. After all we shall feel lucky that the program is just put off, not the promotion of sex education.

comments: I refer to the article by Mr. Jacob von Bisterfeld ("Persistent pronunciation problems @ CCTV" dated 2004-12-2)

Mr Bisterfield's insistence that the "CCTV strived as much as possible to stick to the standard "Queen's English" on their broadcasts and shows" is groundless and displays his ignorance about the English language.

We do not need linguists to remind us that all forms of languages evolve over time and take on different shades and tones in different places. To name just a few, pidgin English in the Carribean as well as many different types of localised "Englishes" in in different parts of the world (for example 'Singapore English or 'Singlish')

These different types of spoken Englishes have thrived and continue to be the lingua franca of many locals.

Thus to insist the 'Queen's English' as the standard spoken norm is not only ill-conceived, it actually reveals Me Bisterfield's shallow understanding of the language and its multifaceted transformation in the contemporary world.
I am however most annoyed by Mr Bisterfield's comments on the so-called 'excessive Americanism' on the CCTV stations. English is not the mother-tongue for most Chinese and is an acquired language learnt in schools.

As Mr Bisterfield himeslef noted, many of the CCTV braodcasters are overseas returnees ('hai gui')- and many
of them had received their education and training in the United States. It is then not surprising that they had acquired the American accent.

There is no reason to expect people to conform to the so-called 'Queen's English', lest Mr Bisterfield wants
to risk being labelled a 'language imperialist'. Arguably, even within the United Kingdom, there exists considerable diversity in the spoken English language. I wonder Mr Bisterfield would express the same opinions he had in China if he is in United Kingdom.

comments: City Light

Scientists predicted that on the night of this Mid-autumn Day, we would be able to see a moon so bright that we would not have a chance to appreciate one for the past few years. Yet prediction is not always true. That night we saw no such bright moon, not because of the cloudiness, but because of the much brighter city light.

The sleepless city light has not only brightened the night sky, it is also blazing the modern city into one without darkness. The light shines above the city as a friend for those who sit up for study into the dead of the night; as a guide, for those who are still on the way during their long journey; and, as a companion, for
those who feel lonely and miserable during these tedious hours. Light brings them warmth, hope and love.

For most people, however, living under the tireless city light has never been something pleasant. The antennae of this intense light reach every corner of the world, exposing everything, good or evil, to every one of them. There seems to be no way to escape. People no longer have secrets to themselves, and privacy
becomes something luxurious. Being fed up with all these, they begin to cherish all the memory of the life without city light. As a result, walls have been lined up; people tend to wear various masks as if the light is penetrating their faces and revealing what they have been deliberately concealing from others.

This is what we have been long living with---city light, splendid yet sleepless, glamorous but glaring.

comments: Have you ever wondered what other reasons that so many foreign companies come to your country to do business? It's not just the "potential" of the Chinese and Indian markets, that potential will take decades to realize. It's not just the low wages of your white collar workers or your numerous countrymen employed in
sweatshops.

With regards to labor laws, in Europe and N. America, especially the US, factory workers, farmers and miners fought actual wars with guns against company security guards, the police, and even the Army to get such
rights as:
1. being paid on time and in the full amount
2. not having large amounts of money deducted by the company for "expenses".
3. safety
4. being able to complain about management without being attacked by security guards.
5. death and injury benefits for workers and their families.
6. form independent unions to handle contract negotiations and protect workers' human and citizen rights.

Someday Chinese and Indian workers can enjoy these rights, but not until they stand up and fight for them. Blood will be shed, people will die, but if it wasn't for past generations in western countries making the
same sacrifices we would be in the same boat.

It is time for all of you to make those foriegn companies fall into line. Stop putting up with this abuse. Opium sales in china forced the Boxer Rebellion, don't you think it is time to rise up against abuse, oppression and poisoning of your land, water and bodies by foreigners looking to exploit your under-developed
legal and regulatory system? Only you can make a difference.

An American friend of the developing world.

comments: I am so surprised that most of chinese do not feel close to Janpanese, though it's our neighbour.I know it is caused by many unhappy reasons. The history, personal expereses, offical traditional, political events and so on.But one reason is so fantastic that I can't believe,it's said that the Janpanese look down on Chinese beacuse of their strong industry. They are rather pride of themselives, meanwhile, why some chinese people only look for profits through trading with Janpenese, they should respect themselves. Every corn has two sides,we should not forget the history and look forward to learning from other's advantage techniques,to develop ourselves.

House Conference on Balanced Economic Development in August 1985. Even though 19 years has elapsed but the spirit of the Macroeconomic management is still useful as reference for China's economy under the market
system.

comments: I wholeheartedly support the comments by whkyruby@hotmail.com (Nov. 30, 2004)I recommended to add Intellectual pursuit and Spiritual satisfaction(Platonic Love) in addition to material consumption over the
Desire for a completed Equation for Happiness. If material consumption is the only goal in life, then money is the be-all and end-all in life. Money is important but it is not the only goal in life,we must be engaged in
intellectual pursuit with spiritual endeavors to make life more fulfilling and meaningful. Folks doing eleemosynary work can be truly happy too. Thanks for endorsing my "zhuo jian" as my goal in Life.
