comments: While reform and opening up policy has injected vitality into China’s routine life, it has also witnessed the fading of our long-held concept of sex and marriage. Suffering a long-term sexual repression,
China, once a reserved nation, has embarked on a so called “sexually enlightened” road. In strong contrast with our age-old practice of one-man-for-ever, we Chinese, today, have transcended the morality boundary with someone even dipping their finger into “taboo areas”. The news pertaining to one-night stand, premarital sex and extramarital affair are flooding into our sight. There is a growing indifference to chastity among
adolescences and an increasing prevalence of prostitution. Lodging onto the internet against the clock, the void urbanites are crazily scouting their sexual partners on the other side of the net, only to seek sex
stimulation. Dominated by materialism and utilitarianism, a growing number of degrading university students opt to become the mi!
stresses of the wealthy men at the expense of youth and self-esteem, only to find out they are nothing but sexual instruments to gratify the lusts of the rich.
Our country is decaying rather than advancing on the ground that the traditional bond of sex and family morality is gradually losing its binding force.
The ABC policies for aids prevention suddenly flash through my mind. Abstinence is mission impossible, being faithful to your spouse is admirable while condom using is acceptable. Here I would like to share with you my innovation, the D policy. That is, dissipation in sex is unbearable.

comments: Far East is an archaic European term to describe East Asia. It is a misnomer for the USA because such area is Near West for the USA. Well,if you go east all the way,you end up in the west.Or if you go west
all the way,you end up in the east. The point is that the east and the west are ONE on the same globe for globalization in the field of economics. Dongbudong? Hahahaha and we shall live to be centenarians. A native of Shanghai said to Shanghai Star.

comments: I WANT TO DO SOMETHING MEANINGFUL FOR BEIJING OLYMPICGAMES
Last summer, the Olympic Game of Athens was a huge success for us. Knowing that in less than 4 years, after have been waited and anticipated for such a long time, Beijing will finally be the focus of the whole world,
I can not describe what my feeling is, perhaps it is the same as seeing Chinese flag rising high above and hearing our national anthem, because at that time, we are proud of our country.

Being the host of the game is of course more than this; there is still a lot of work to do. What I can do for Beijing is probably not that much, but just like what they say about the Olympic game: in the end, what
really counts is the fact that one has particapated. To be more concrete about what i can do in the coming years, I would like to go into two important aspects which I think together will partially make up a good preparation for the Game.

First, how to make the environment better is a big issue for us. As a matter of fact, the environment here is not so good as most of other big cities in the world, so planting trees is necessary, even though the time is short, but there will be more "green" in the city. Using recyclable bag can be another good idea. One such bag probably means nothing to the environment, but if many people are prepared to do that, there will be more blue sky here in 2008. I plan to do both of the things now, because it is not only for our guests, but also for the benefit of us.

Second, It is imaginable how a large-scale reception work will be needed in 2008. I know the Olympic reception work requires large numbers of English-speaking personnel and I'm aware that many people in Beijing
are learning English for it. I am one of them. Even Liuqi, the mayor of Beijing uses all his time to learn English. The intension to take part in this reception work is not only because I have special interests in
English, but I also think it is a duty of being a citizen in Beijing. In 2008, I will volunteer to be an Olympic translator, so I can tell our friends from other countries about everything they want to know about
China, make sure they get to know China better and appreciate our amazing culture. I can also tell them about the delicious food and attractive tours in Beijing.

As a person who has been learning English for a long time, I can share some experience with people who is working hard to improve their English, the same as our contestants today. I think language is more about
communication and should be used to bridge the gap between different cultures, it is not practicing grammar rules and learning lists of words. So instead of the old fashioned way, I will suggest them to practice oral
English as often as possible and feel free to speak.

I believe together with me, millions of people in Beijing and china will surly make their own contribution. The foreigners will be amazed by both of the Olympic game and our rich and fascinating culture. We can and
will make those ‘Laowai’s china trip the best memory of their life.

comments: Americans set aside the special day of Thanksgiving to gather with family and friends to count our blessings. At the first Thanksgiving festivals in the Virginia and Massachusetts colonies, the original
settlers made praise and prayer for a bountiful harvest and hope for a promising future as the centerpieice of their celebrations. Well,Chinese folks in China and ethnic Chinese in every nook and corner of the world
are equally thankful for better living conditions and a promising future in the days to come. There is the common interests of peoples in the US and in China as homo-sapiens on earth for global economic development.

comments: Dear Sir/Madam

I am an old friend of Shanghai Star. As an English newspaper, your readers are the people who are from all walks of life. Some of them are not familiar with English. Personally, I think, the words and sentences
should be easy but meaningful. But sometimes I find that some words and sentences in your newspaper can't be understand easily. They are unfamiliar and uncommon. That creats some difficulties for the readers who are not good at English. If your newspaper can publish some articles and stories which are easy and interesting, that would attract more new learners in English.

Thanks for your kind attention.

Best wishes

“Following a period of relative quiet, the subject of Japanese war crimes exploded as a result of several developments, especially Iris Chang's The Rape Of Nanjing. But in Japan, nationalists deny that events such as the Nanjing Massacre ever took place -- or minimize their horrors to make them appear inconsequential.”
I felt heart breaking when I read the data from how much horrible things Japanese did to us Chinese.

comments: I was having light dinner with an overseas friend after showing her how nice it is in Xintiandi one Saturday night a couple of weeks ago in early November.
We order only 1 Hawaiian pizza, a glass of ginger ale and orange juice, sitting outside at around 9pm. What surprised us was that to the bill added Rmb 40 for service charge, the bill itself was Rmb 116.
OK, we agree to pay and ask for the bill, the funny thing is that on the bill there was not any mentioned of the Rmb 40.
When I queried further The waitress said it is Latina policy if we sit outside they will charge Rmb 40. We don’t mind, yet when we asked again how come it is not stated on the bill? She returned Rmb 30.- with very rude manner and do not want to give any receipt at all.
That will be my last time to Latina Restaurant, clearly there is intend to cheat and if it is the management policy .This is the first time I ever experienced such thing in a restaurant after 5 years living in Shanghai.

cannot think of a bigger discrepantion. If Liu Xiang is a real sportsman, he should promote that smoking is unhealthy and will definately not improve the sportive skills of the young generation

comments: I have been in Shangai in 1987 and understand that the city has considerably changed during these last 17 years. Would you be so kind to tell how I can get the actual figures for this economic and architectural boom?
A delegation from Shenzhen City has been recently in Brazil and it was really impressive to see the fantastic modernization of that old 30,000 people town in only 20 years. I admired Shangai as it was n 1987 and would really appreciate to know the reasons to appreciate it still more nowadays.

comments: We are from USA and are traveling to Shanghai in October or November. We would like to have the email address and/or phone number for the Old House Inn in Shanghai. We saw an article in on the web dated
Shanghai Star. 2004-02-05 see text below:

"A LANE on Huashan Lu, close to Changshu Lu, is a typical old-style Shanghai residential area with dozens of low buildings. However, recently, a red "shed" propped up against one of the houses has made it a little more
eye-catching and different - it's a boutique hotel, maybe the first of its kind in Shanghai.

The interior of the Old House Inn was designed by a Shanghainese architect Wu Haiqing...

Thank you for your help

contributed great economic success to the world. In the debate between President Bush and Senator Kerry,China is mentioned as an important nation making contributions to peace for humankind. Salutations to motherland

comments: Greetings from England, U.K.! I thoroughly enjoyed Smoke signals from ancient times, by Miao Qing,
Shanghai Star. 2004-08-12.

The information about the history of tobacco at the new China Tobacco Museum was very interesting and when I read about the Museum exhibition of 揳ll sorts of implements from tobacco pipes, lighters and ashtray to
tobacco cases.?nbsp; It reminded me of an unbelievable collection of tobacco-related matchstick and matchbox art my late father made eight decades ago.

I can also tell you about another coincidence with my father抯 unique works of art and the China Tobacco Museum. Xin Yuanming said, 揟he inspiration for the design came from the ship in which Christopher Columbus discovered tobacco in America.?nbsp; Well, my father抯 inspiration for his tobacco-related work came to him while on board a cargo ship that plied its trade around the English Channel during the 1930s.

If you are interested to learn more about my father抯 tobacco-related collection, there is a photo of the ship where he imagined and created his work online at: http://visseraa.topcities.com/UK/id283.htm

There is a beautiful photo of one of his creations at: http://www.projectguitar.com/gal/2s.htm

Two photo stories explain the specifics of how/why my father originated the idea and how he accomplished the task of of creating his collection with the most primitive of tools: http://www.ibluegrass.com/bg_posting3.CFM?p__i=641&p__r=&p__a=match

http://www.m-navydays.com/newpages/Matchstickman/Jackhall.htm

Do you think Xin Yuanming would be interested to be made aware of my collection? If you do I would very much
appreciate if you will send the information for his attention at the China Tobacco Museum.

Thank you for your time and I hope you enjoy reviewing the information about my father抯 work.

Sincerely yours,

Tony Hall, Guinness World Record holder

Here I'd like to ask you to do me a favor. I purchased an apartment in JinQiao District Pudong last year. However here used to be the development zone with many factories and companies.Among which there is a container company using a lot of oil paint giving off bad smell all day long. We now have a lot of residential compounds and a primary school closeby. The residents, primary school students and teachers all suffer a lot from this poisonous smell. We wrote many times to related department but couldn't get good answer. We hope we can get the help from your side.Thank you for your help in advance.

comments: Chinese leader Li Changchun is visiting DPRK now and such visit would pave the way for 6-nation talk around the end of September. China does play an important role re making efforts for peace in East Asia for the best interests of all six involved nations, namely,China,USA,South Korea,North Korea,Japan and Russia. I have reason to believe that folks are always interested in peace, not conflict in that part of the world.

Hello,

My name is Patrick Bois and I have been teaching in Suzhou for 3 weeks. I love it here in Suzhou, and there's nothing more that I would enjoy than to write about my experiences. You see, I would love to free-lance for your newspaper (for free, of course). I have degrees in Psychology and Philosophy, yet, my calling has been journalism for some years. Throughout
university, I was editor for the Glendon Protem (a York University newspaper in Toronto, Canada) and wrote for several other little newspapers. What I need is to build up my portfolio so that it teems with experience. I know
that realistically, I could not write a lot for your newspaper. However, I would love to write a few articles about what I see and have seen around me.
I will be applying to Ryerson University in Toronto in a few months (Ryerson has the best journalism program in Canada), and they only accept 40 applicants out of thousands. Thus, I would really love to write a few articles for your newspaper. As of yet, the only people that could vouch for me here are Mr. Jun Zhou (my recruiter), Mr. Shu, my principal here, and
the mayor of Suzhou (I tutor his daughter). In sum, any help would be greatly appreciated. I look forward to your reply.

Sincerely,

Patrick Bois

comments: Hello from Lincoln, Nebraska USA. I will be a visitor to your beautiful country in November. Unfortunately, it will not be in Shanghai, but in Chengdu.

I was a little disturbed when I read this in these commentaries:

" In the real United States of America women have no rights. No rights to work, no rights to drive, no rights at all. Taken away by this present U.S. Supreme Court in the last tirty years under morals laws of not being religious enough. No right for women to work. No right for any women to collect child support because this is stealing income from men who work. This was done to use their children in work camps for the U.S. governments prison companies. After all they cost money to feed."

I do hope this is either a joke or a terrible misunderstanding. It is true that women do not have the full
rights that men enjoy in the United States. However, this gap is being narrowed everyday. It is an exageration to say women have no rights at all. They have the right to vote, run for office, hold onto a job, have a bank account, drive and own cars, compete for the same jobs men have and so forth. The list is endless.

I can tell you from personal experience women have the right to collect child support, and in fact I give some every month. If I fail to give child support I risk going to prison.

There is a wage gap between men and women in our country. Men make more than women in most areas. This is a serious problem, and being addressed. It has not been solved, however.

The United States is not perfect, but I did think that the posting I read was unfair in its view of the United States.

Thank you for allowing me to post this, I look forward to a wonderful time in Chengdu.

It is interesting information to Americans of Jewish ancestry since their influence is strong in all fields of endeavor. Moreover,I can detect the closer relations between the US and China in the days to come for multi-national or international cultural affinity, investment, business, education and other fields of cooperation. I am a reader of Washington Post on daily basis and such paper is influential in the nation's capital for readers in our area and around the world. That is my objective observation as an independent American scholar of Chinese ancestry a.k.a. Xie Shihao, thanks from a
