Whiter than white at the tooth wash YOU will read elsewhere of a sparkling new service about to close in on Shanghai - a teeth cleaning laundry. Now this is obviously another ploy by our daring dentists to help remove that innate fear, no terror, of going to the dentist in the days of footpedal driven drills (I saw one in India five years ago). Then came the noisy, concrete-cutters, all of which have now been replaced by ultra high speed, water-cooled silent drills, the spacecraft design dentist chairs, the piped-in music... Ah bliss. The teeth cleaning laundry brings to mind another process - that of where you might leave your teeth there, like half a dozen shirts and a couple of skirts and pick them up 24 hours later. It also reminds of the days of long ago when the dentures were left at bedtime in a glass of water complete with the cleaning compound "Steradent," a white gritty substance, on the night table, to be removed by their owner sparkling white the next morning. Though sometime through forgetfulness or a hale and hearty dinner, the owner of the dentures would not take them out and they had been known to come loose under the bedclothes and clamp onto a sleeping partner's big toe. Meanwhile back at the Shanghai teeth cleaning laundry, there could be a new twist to the maybe apocryphal story of the drunk in a Midwestern US laundromat trying to focus on the machines. With teeth being laundered, it could add a new dimension to "Jaws" - maybe the feature would be "White Fang," or "Choppers at 12 o'clock High." But it is maybe something that was lost in the translation because the Shanghai initiative is a good one, clean-in or take-out. It is aimed at stopping bad breath, a relief in the crowded city, bleeding gums and general preventative care in the community's dentistry. Brian Cummins from Australia now works in Shanghai.
