Ships laden with foreign tarde CHINA'S export container market has been brisk over the first six months of the year with its composite index climbing to 1,182.28 points yesterday, up more than 30 points since January. Chen Yan, a spokeswoman from the Shanghai Shipping Exchange, said many services are overloaded at the country's major container wharves due to a rapid increase of foreign trade. But many shipping companies have not added more ships to meet the demand, they are handling the cargo peak by co-operating with one another, Chen said. China Shipping Company (CSC) has opened services bound from Shanghai for the east coast of the United States and Europe by joining forces with France's CMA CGM. COSCO has also co-operated with Singapore Taiping Shipping Company to open services bound for North China and Southeast Asia by putting on three ships, each able to carry 1,400 20-foot containers. Between January and May, services bound for the west coast of the United States increased by 30,000 20-foot containers and services bound for the US east coast grew by 89,000 20-foot containers, Chen said. Services bound for Europe increased by 33,000 20-foot containers. CSC, positive about prospects for the shipping market, is opening a second service bound for the west coast of the US. Six ships, each carrying 2,000 20-foot containers, will be used on the service, Chen said. Copyright 2000 by Shanghai Star. All rights reserved. |
