Ancient horseback culture show
By Zhang Qian

FAMOUS for its vast stretch of grassland and pasture, northern China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region has long been a homeland for the nomadic tribes, who created a splendid culture in the land.

A special show called "Treasures in the Grassland" will be staged at Shanghai Museum from July 1 to November 30, displaying the ancient grassland cultures to the Shanghainese.

Nearly 300 arts and crafts from New Stone Age to the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368) will be on show, all of which were discovered in Inner Mongolia.

The show consists of three parts: Xinglongwa culture and Hongshan culture, the culture of Donghu and Xiongnu, or the Huns, an ancient minority in China as well as culture of Xianbei minority, Qidan minority and Mongolian minority from the 3rd to the 15th century.

Well-known for its jade, Hongshan Old Site is a very important region in ancient Chinese history. Various Hongshan jades will be shown including the yellow dragon jade, human figure jade and pig-head jade.

The Huns first appeared in the western part of Inner Mongolia in the Western Zhou period (c. 11th century - 771 BC). Everyone who has read Edward Gibbon's big volume, "The Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire" will, no doubt, be impressed by the bravery of "the folks living on horseback." They not only promoted the cultural exchanges between the north and south in China, but also had a strong impact on world history with their travels across three continents, including Asia, Europe and Africa. Exhibits such asbronze swords and helmets reflect their life in ancient times.

From the exhibits one can get an idea of the daily life of the Mongolian minority and their culture.
