The pick of Kunju operas
By Zhang Qian

SHANGHAI Kunju Opera Troupe will perform several operas including "Peony Pavilion" (version 1999), "Journey to the West" and "Wang Zhaojun" at Yifu Theatre from June 22 through 27.

Written by the great Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) playwright Tang Xianzu, "Peony Pavilion" focuses on the trials and tribulations of protagonist Du Liniang.

Kunju opera is famous for its sweet, slow singing and graceful elegant dance, though one show in this programme, a comic Kunju opera about the false and true sons-in-law of an ancient Chinese emperor, is bolder in style.

All the opera singers graduated from the Kunju group of Shanghai opera school in 1993. After seven years of stage experience, some of them are well-known to Kunju opera fans.

"The Peony Pavilion" will be subtitled in both Chinese and English.
