Hoary hoodlums up crime
By Hu Guangping

WHILE juvenile delinquency continues to draw increasing concern from the public, crime by the elderly is also creeping up, according to Minhang District Procuratorate.

The procuratorate recently handled four cases involving aged suspects.

In a recent case, 75-year-old Gu Xiaoliang was arrested for attacking his daughter-in-law and granddaughter.

Gu had spent a third of his life in prisons.

As a result of the long confinement, he had developed an uncommunicative disposition and often found fault with his children.

His children, instead of showing care for their father, often confronted Gu, and once Gu's daughter-in-law beat him up in public.

Reportedly losing all hope for his future life, Gu in a state of depression hit his daughter-in-law on the head with a hammer on the morning of April 8.

The daughter-in-law, blood all over her head, fled the scene and rushed to the police.

Gu then went into his granddaughter's room and hit her on the head with an electric iron, causing extensive injuries to the child.

Another case involved 88-year-old Zhao Hongwen, who committed suicide after stabbing to death another 78-year-old man on January 19 in an Old Folks' Home in Minhang District.

Zhao launched the attack after the two had a quarrel while watching television.

Another case involved Zhang Benxiu, in her 60s, who was suspected of resorting to fraud to obtain money for her 40-year-old son to use.

The mother and son arranged a trap for those seeking to rent a house by pretending that a vacant apartment was theirs.

An 50-year-old man is expected to stand trial for the fifth time in his life for stabbing a man to death.

According to the procuratorate, the suspect Chen Jiaqing from Minhang District, was a hardened criminal.

When he was released on March 28 last year, Chen had already spent 24 years in prisons.

But soon after his release, he again became a local bully.

On November 28 last year, he was told that one of his "brothers" had been beaten up in a quarrel.

Armed with a knife, he rushed to the scene and demanded a duel with the opponent at a construction site.

At the designated time, Chen was engaged first in a fist fight with the opponent.

During their fight, Chen thrust his knife into the heart of his adversary and killed him.
