Hello Kitty products sold on Fenyang Rd HELLO Kitty has taken the cartoon character marketing world by storm with her image popping up on all kinds of merchandise throughout Asia. At the junction of Fenyang and Huaihai roads is a shop selling all kinds of Hello Kitty products. The shop is also a restaurant, serving food and beverages on two floors. Goods here don't come cheap because they are all imported from Japan so that they incur tariffs. A board on the wall says this shop is the 11th authorized shop selling Hello Kitty's products in China. Stuffed Hello Kitty toys sell for between 600 yuan ($72) and 1,200 yuan ($145). One range wearing a graduation mortarboard is a popular gift for friends celebrating graduation. It costs 788 yuan ($95). Some are limited edition toys and no longer available elsewhere. One large Hello Kitty of about 40 centimetres in height is priced 1,200 yuan ($145). "Our boss brought this over from Japan in 1997 and you can't buy it even in Japan now," said a salesgirl. Household objects of all descriptions bearing the Hello Kitty image is sold in the shop. A tissue holder made of light purple cloth is made in the shape of a sofa. Hello Kitty and her boyfriend Daniel sit side by side on the couch. Tissues can be pulled out of the box from between them. These tissue holders cost between 300 yuan ($36) and 498 yuan ($60). In one corner of the shop, knick-knacks costing just 25 yuan ($3) are on sale: towels, chopsticks, combs, mirrors, cups, spoons and forks all at the same price. But most goods are more expensive - a pair of mugs, blue for a boy and pink one a girl are sold for 368 yuan ($44). An electric powered toaster and an oven both sell at around 650 yuan ($79). You can bake cookies in the shape of Hello Kitty's image with the oven. The shop's most expensive articles are its telephones. A pink mobile phone with image of Hello Kitty jumping on its screen is priced 4,880 yuan ($589). It has a recharger and a stand attached and comes in silver grey as an alternative colour. A cordless house phone is priced 2,980 yuan ($360). It displays the caller's phone number when it rings. It is expensive because it is a special edition. There are many decorations for mobile phones in the shop, all priced at 137 yuan ($17) or more. Pendants and laces of all patterns and lengths are popular with young people eager to make their phones unique and these ornaments can be changed each day, to suit different moods.
