US helps export index stay buoyant

THE composite index for China's export containers was reported at 1,179.02 points yesterday, up 1.8 per cent last week.
"The index is expected to go up thanks to China's booming economy," said Chen Yan, a spokeswoman with the Shanghai Shipping Exchange.
Services bound for the west and east coasts of the United States are brisk with their indexes reaching 1,322.20 points and 1,563.62 points, an increase of 1.1 per cent and 2.3 per cent respectively.
Statistics show that between January and April China exported 893,100 20-foot containers to the United States, up 4.9 per cent over the same period last year.
Long Beach port imported 178,489 20-foot containers in March and Los Angeles handled 407,032 20-foot containers in the same month.
The index for Hong Kong services was reported at 912.62 points, a rise of 26.4 per cent over last month.
