Trains for metro, light rails arrive
By Lu Chang

NEW metro trains to be used on Metro Line 2 and the elevated light track under construction have arrived in Shanghai from Germany.

Each train has four carriages and two locomotives, weighing a total of 202 tons. The Sino-Polish Joint Stock Shipping Company has shipped 16 coaches for Metro Line 1 and 14 for Line 2, since 1992.

Another 21 metro trains will be transported by the company by April, 2002.

"The transportation requires careful handling because the trains are delicate and fragile," said Paul Trenkle, consultant project manager with Europe Transport Consultants.

The company now has 20 multipurpose vessels that can carry a combined 15,200 20-foot containers.

The company, China's first Sino-foreign joint venture, has set up agencies in major port cities including Dalian, Tianjin, Yantai, Guangzhou and Xiamen.

"The recent shipping business was not good because of the Asian financial crisis," said Jerzy Korecki, general director of the company. "We have rivals in China's market, including foreign counterparts," he said.

However, Jaroslaw Zawadzki, management division manager with the company, said that throughout 49-years of operations in China the company has gained precious experience and is familiar with the market, which is an advantage other foreign countries can't reach.
