China in different eyes
PHOTOGRAPHY has always been characterized by two schools: realism and aestheticism. While the former emphasizes fidelity to historical detail, the latter cares only about conveying beauty in photos.

The flower in the hand of Buddha
By Xiao Zhnag

A STORY about Buddha goes that when one of Buddha's followers asked "what is Buddhism?" Buddha answered by touching a flower and smiling.

To Feng Xiaodong, this story is his muse, the inspiration of many of his paintings.

"Only after many years passed, did I know the profound meaning of the flower in the hand of the smiling Buddha," said Feng, an artist from Central China's Hubei Province. "For years, I have tried to paint many flowers, the real and the unreal, the imaginary but never-fading ones."

Feng's works look serene, they express a kind of transcendence after strife.

"His paintings convey a feeling of freedom of spirit," said Zhu Ying, director of the newly opened 3 in 1 Art Gallery.

To Zhu, appreciating works of art is more a relaxing pastime than any kind of spiritual journey. That's why he has chosen Feng's paintings for the gallery's first show.

Even the name of the gallery represents, Zhu explained, a relaxed combination of ideas. He said: "3 in 1 combines three concepts - it, you and I, or the customer community, creation of art and I in one."
