MAY days will be soon upon us. And it is May days or May daze. The annual May Day (May 1) holiday is to be celebrated, not by just one day of rest, but as I am told, by a sybaritic seven days off in Shanghai. I still struggle to get my Western mind around the East's system of awarding holidays and how one day can become, like loaves and fishes, seven. Maybe, it is coming from crabby cultures where the day off was fought for tooth and nail over years of union militancy. All this will be of vicarious interest

Beware of thieves posing as friends
By Wan Lixin

INGRATITUDE of several persons shown towards the kindness of their relatives or friends will result in their punishment.

Minhang Procuratorate reveals a man was recently arrested for setting fire to his aunt's home after stealing from her.

He had stayed with his aunt's family in Shanghai for a long time.

As the aunt regarded him like her own child, she sometimes criticized him for his misconduct to aid his development. As a result, he grew angry at his aunt.

On March 9, he stole over 6,000 yuan ($720) worth of jewellery, cash, and cards from his aunt's home and then set fire to the house.

The fire was quickly brought under control and the man was arrested the following day.

Another criminal case of ingratitude involved an farmer From East China's Anhui Province who came to Shanghai in February to seek employment.

As he was unable to find a job, he came to a barbershop in Minhang District where one of his cousins worked as an employee. The boss of the barbershop was kind enough to put him up at the barbershop.

But in the early morning of March 7, the man stole 4,000 yuan ($480) from the shop and made it look as a thief had broken into the shop.

He was arrested the following day.

Yet another ingrate, was a 28-year-old man, who came to Shanghai in October last year to work as a clerk for an advertisement company.

As he had no dwelling place, he was kindly put up by a friend.

On October 28 last year, the man stole 34,742 yuan ($4,190) from the company and squandered the money on dining, clothing and travelling.

He was recently prosecuted and may have to make full restitution.
