May Day, May Day calling all shoppers
MAY days will be soon upon us. And it is May days or May daze. The annual May Day (May 1) holiday is to be celebrated, not by just one day of rest, but as I am told, by a sybaritic seven days off in Shanghai. I still struggle to get my Western mind around the East's system of awarding holidays and how one day can become, like loaves and fishes, seven. Maybe, it is coming from crabby cultures where the day off was fought for tooth and nail over years of union militancy. All this will be of vicarious interest

Ex-husband sets fire to marital home
By Mei Fangming
A MAN was recently arrested for starting a fire in his ex-wife's house to vent his spite after she refused to let him stay the night, according to the Zhabei District Procuratorate.
Last October, the man agreed to divorce his wife. The court ruled that his son, who had just reached adulthood, should live with his mother.
Despite the divorce, the man continued to live with his ex-wife and son for some time, until two months later, when he moved out of the family home and sought accommodation elsewhere.
On March 18 this year, he took the bus to his ex-wife's place after dinner, intending to stay at his ex-wife's room for the night.
His ex-wife flatly refused, and his son was apparently supportive of his mother.
The man flared up and decided to beat up his son.
He was no match for the woman and son together and beat a hasty retreat.
As it was late and the bus service to his dwelling-place had stopped running, he had to stay the night in a small garden nearby.
Early next morning, he again went to his former home and broke into the house.
He found nobody at home because his ex-wife and son had already taken refuge at a relative's place as they knew he might seek revenge. The man opened the fridge and began to drink beer.
He apparently became very angry again when he thought of the whole incident.
So he set fire to some clothes in the wardrobe before fleeing the scene.
On March 21, the man, accompanied by his sister and brother-in-law, gave himself up to the police.
