Heart attack risk not seen with fen-phen CHICAGO - Dieters who took the since-recalled drug cocktail known as fen-phen raised their risk of developing a heart valve problem but were not at higher risk of suffering a heart attack, a study said on Tuesday. Doctors at the University of California, Irvine, said their study found obese patients who took the diet drugs for an average of three months or more exhibited two to three times the rate of aortic regurgitation of patients treated without the drugs. Aortic regurgitation occurs when blood being pumped out of the heart leaks back in because of damage to the valves. But rates of serious cardiac events such as heart attack, congestive heart failure or ventricular arrhythmia were the same in both groups of patients, the report said. Part of a popular drug combination known as fen-phen, fenfluramine was sold under the brand name Pondimin by Wyeth Laboratories, a division of American Home Products Corp, and A.H. Robins Co Dexfenfluramine was sold under the name Redux, which was developed by Interneuron Pharmaceuticals Inc, which licensed the drug to Wyeth.
