Murderers of taxi driver given death sentence TWO men who tortured a Songjiang District taxi driver to death and buried the corpse in a roadside ditch in East China's Anhui Province have been sentenced to death. He Xinquan and Gao Xinglong from Shanghai have been given death sentences and fined 20,000 ($2,400) respectively. Hu Kebao from Huoqiu in Anhui Province will serve life imprisonment. The three men sold the taxi of the murdered man for 40,000 yuan ($4,800) in Huoqiu after killing him on May 23, 1998. They then spent all the money with their friends. The identities of the murderers was only revealed when Hu Kebao was arrested for a separate case of theft in July last year. The prison authorities discovered Hu had been using his brother's name and an investigation indicated that he was suspected of selling a stolen car in Huoqiu. Hu later confessed to the robbery and the murder and provided clues which led to the arrest in September last year of the other two suspects. As Hu was co-operative with police investigations he was dealt with leniently. Copyright 2000 by Shanghai Star. All rights reserved. |
