Air pollution declined last week
SHANGHAI'S air quality improved last week from the previous week, according to a report from the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Centre. The overall air quality, measured by the Air Pollution Index (API), was in class 2, meaning good. The average APIs for sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxide and total suspended particles (TSP) declined by 41, 36 and 62 per cent, respectively. Nitrogen oxide, caused by the burning of cooking gas and vehicle exhaust, was still the main pollutant and its index jumped to 184 on Friday to the range of medium pollution. The Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Centre now operates six automatic air monitors in the city's Putuo, Yangpu, Luwan, Hongkou, Jing'an and Xuhui districts. Data is collected every 30 minutes and a report is released every day after lunch. (Star News)
