1st step to intelligent cars EVEN if you are a newcomer to London, Paris or New York, you can drive through the zigzagging roads or back streets without getting lost with an intelligent transportation system (ITS) in your car. ITS is an intelligent guide that tells you where you are and which is the best way to reach your destination. It even informs you of traffic congestion and the weather conditions when behind the wheel. Back in China, ITS remains a distant dream. But General Motors China and the Ministry of Science and Technology (MST) are to co-sponsor China's first contest on intelligent transportation systems to promote research and applications in the technology in the country. The "Automobiles and Transportation, Their Present and Future - China ITS Solution Contest" is now accepting research papers on the subject of improving driving conditions while ensuring smooth traffic flow in Chinese cities. Contest winners will be given cash awards of up to 40,000 yuan ($4,800). One winner will be selected to work alongside researchers at GM headquarters in the United States for six months. The final reading and assessment will be held in Beijing on July 3, with the awards ceremony taking place on July 4, coinciding with the opening of the "Second Asia-Pacific Conference and Exhibition on Transportation and Environment," a show to update China with the latest developments in transportation management and solutions. China has set up an official group, "National ITS Steering Committee," to draft China's national ITS strategy and promote modernization of the country's transportation system.
