Fake bicycle maker arrested
By Wan Lixin

A SUSPECT who specialized in manufacturing fake Phoenix brand bicycles was detained after a recent surprise raid in which municipal police confiscated 2,473 bicycles and many components.

Police were informed on March 6 that 37-year-old Chen Genrong, an operator of a local company, was suspected of manufacturing the fake Phoenix brand bicycles in a rented building in Gongqingtuan Road.

The building was put under close surveillance the following week.

It was found Chen had hired a dozen migrant workers who were busy from 7:00 am to 10:00 pm assembling the fake brand bicycles.

Every day, an average of 200 to 300 crates containing about 1,500 bicycles would be shipped from the building.

Their manufacture was kept secret because once the workers arrived, the gate would be locked from the inside.

The finished products would be shipped for a storage in another location before they were sold across the country.

On March 14, over 30 local police in four groups launched a surprise raid.

Chen was seized, and many of the finished and unfinished fake products confiscated.

Police estimate that at least 1,000 of the bicycles have been sold in Henan, Anhui, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang provinces.
