Well-travelled baritone to stage recital WHEN opera singer Zhang Feng went to Italy on a Katia Ricciarelli fellowship two years ago, he was detained by the customs officers in Milan who suspected he was going there doing business and rejected his entry. Even when the Italian host from the Verona Opera House tried to dissuade the officers, it was useless. Zhang had to sing the famous aria "she is as beautiful as an angel" before the officers let him go. During his stay in Italy, Zhang had performed with Katia Ricciarelli twice. The 30-year-old baritone of Shanghai Opera House, who has won many awards, including the first prize of the 4th Budapest International Vocal Contest in September 1998, will hold a recital on April 8 at the Shanghai Concert Hall. Zhang, who was born and spent his childhood in Northwest China's Xinjing Autonomous Region, will perform a wide ranging programme including classical and modern, foreign and Chinese. A graduate of Shanghai Conservatory of Music, Zhang has toured and performed in the United States, Switzerland, Hungary, Indonesia, Macao, Beijing and Dalian, taking lead roles in the operas "Romeo and Juliet," "Carmen," "Faust" and "La Tosca." Three female opera singers, Chen Xiaoqun, Fang Qiong and Zhang Hao will also perform during the concert, to the accompaniment of Shanghai Symphony Orchestra and pianist Liu Yuqiong.
