Anti-cancer agent found in hazelnuts SAN FRANCISCO - A potent cancer fighting chemical previously found only in the bark of the yew tree has unexpectedly turned up in hazelnuts, a discovery which could mean cheaper anti-cancer drugs, scientists said on Wednesday. "This is potentially good news for cancer patients," Angela Hoffman of the University of Portland in Oregon said in a release announcing the discovery to a meeting of the American Chemical Society. The chemical, generically known as paclitaxel, is the active ingredient in the drug Taxol, a blockbuster anti-cancer drug manufactured by Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. Taxol is approved in the United States for treating ovarian cancer, breast cancer, non-small-cell lung cancer and an AIDS-related cancer known as Kaposi's sarcoma. Clinical trials have shown it to have promise in treating psoriasis, kidney disease, multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer's among other diseases, which will likely boost future demand.
