Xujiahui offers lots of advantages
By Jan Flohr

BOTH local Shanghainese and foreigners see Xujiahui in the city's southwest Xuhui District as one of Shanghai's best residential areas.

A section of the major shopping street Huaihai Road runs through Xujiahui. Hengshan Road, an elegant street where much of the city's nightlife is concentrated, and Xujiahui shopping area are both located in the district.

Xujiahui now has the Pacific Department Store, the Oriental Department Store, No 6 Department Store and the newly opened Grand Gateway Plaza offering almost everything you could want to buy.

In the northeast of Xujiahui there are a couple of properties which are popular with foreign residents. They are 41 Hengshan Road and Regal Garden which are serviced apartments at the upper end of the market with only the Shanghai Centre on Nanjing Road as their main competitor. Regal Garden is a serviced apartment complex which offers membership of the Shanghai International Tennis Centre Health Club.

At the centre of Xujiahui is the Grand Gateway Garden and at the nearby Guangyuan road is Arcadia. These two newly opened serviced apartments attract a relatively large number of tenants. The health club which includes a 25-metre swimming pool is one of the main attractions of Arcadia.

There are also a number of old style houses in the area but the supply of renovated old houses cannot meet the huge demand for them.
