Russia to sail China-US route
By Chen Qide

CONTAINER shipping is booming despite the fact that this is traditionally the slack season.

Container exports in March rose by 10 per cent over the previous month, pushing up the composite index for export containers.

The index released by the Shanghai Shipping Exchange yesterday was reported at 1,139.72 points, up 0.8 per cent over last month.

"The index is bound to rise in April because of the hike in freight charges," said Liu Xiaoliang, a spokesman with the exchange.

Russia's Far East Shipping Company announced that it will start up services from the Chinese mainland bound for the West Coast of the United States in April.

The company will put two more ships into service for the new route, each carrying 1,800 20-foot containers.

Liu said services bound for the Republic of Korea from China are brisk. They shipped 920,000 containers last year, up 27 per cent over the previous year.

Industry experts say the service is expected to transport 1.1 million containers this year.

"Foreign shipping companies are also positive about the service," he said.
