DuPont to invest more in China

DUPONT will continue to expand its investment in Shanghai if China enters the World Trade Organization.

"We will not increase imports to replace local products," said Charles Browne, newly-appointed president of Shanghai-based DuPont China Holding Company Ltd.

Browne said DuPont is considering expanding production in its investment plan.

"China is an important market for DuPont in the Asia-Pacific region because its performance has a significant impact on achieving its regional growth target of 20 per cent in 2000," he said.

Its Asia-Pacific business grew by 22 per cent last year due to the recovery of the regional economy. Sales in China exceeded $1.3 billion, an increase of 30 per cent.

DuPont has enlarged its Lycra plant in Qingpu by investing an additional $25 million. The total investment in the plant now stands at $115 million.

"The investment will increase as the market expands," he said.
