Madonna with second child

LONDON - Pop superstar Madonna announced on Monday she is three months pregnant with her second child.

A statement released by the 41-year-old American singer, who is dating British film director Guy Ritchie, ended weeks of speculation that the couple were expecting a child.

It said they were "happy to confirm rumours" which had been publicized only hours earlier by a report on The Sun newspaper's website.

"We would be grateful if the media would kindly allow us some privacy at this special time and we thank you all for your good wishes," the statement added.

The Sun cited unnamed friends of Madonna saying she was "absolutely ecstatic" after learning that she will give birth in September to a half brother or sister for her three-year-old daughter Lourdes.
