HK pianist Cheng Wai to play

DIFFERENT cities have different standards by which they gauge musicians' talent.

In Beijing, a musician's technique and precision are emphasized. In Hong Kong, a musician's musical understanding and artistic appeal are developed, and in the United States, a musician's musical interpretation and unity and his own personality are the critical focus.

So a musician who succeeds in one city may not in another. But this is not the case for the Hong Kong pianist Cheng Wai, who has given successful shows in almost every country she has performed in.

Starting piano lessons at the age of six, Cheng received a doctor's degree in music at performance from New York University.

She has been a winner in several international piano competitions, including the 1987 the Hong Kong Young Music Performers' Competition, the 1995 New York Begen Orchestra Competition for Violin and Piano and the 1995 William Byrd International Young Artist Competition. Cheng also gave recitals at the Kennedy Centre, Washington DC and co-operated with some symphony orchestras as a soloist.

Invited to perform on the mainland by the Shanghai Grand Theatre, Cheng Wai will tour Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou.

The programme at the March 24 concert at the Concert Hall of Shanghai Grand Theatre includes Mozart's piano sonata, Ravel's noble dances and Chopin's preludes.
