Easy on the eye
By Xu Xiaomin

EYES were likened to autumnal lake waters and deep ponds in ancient Chinese literature.

But busy modern life which usually involves staying up late or over-using computers can damage the windows to your soul, causing wrinkles and even swollen eyelids.

Shanghai Star has put together some simple treatments for eye problems which you can do yourself at home.

Simple Prescription

1. Tired eyes - When your eyes feel overtired, an "eye bath" can refresh them. Soak your face in warm water with a little chrysanthemum tea in it and open your eyes in the water for a few seconds which can help to wash away any dirt.

2. Swollen eyelids - Eyes will swell if overtired or nervous. Just apply warm (red tea) teabags or chrysanthemum tea to your eyelids for a few minutes to make the swelling go down.

Alternatively, apply something cool to the eyelids. Cool water, red teabags or melon juice will all visibly alleviate the problem in minutes.

Remember also not to drink too much water before going to bed which can cause swollen eyelids the next morning.

3. Wrinkles - Be careful not to frown or squint too much!

4. Rings around the eyes - Fresh air, strolls and running can help relieve ringed, tired eyes caused by lack of sleep.

The following foods are good for the eyes: vegetables, especially carrots, tomatoes, peppers, celery; fruits including oranges and apricots; animal liver and eggs are also helpful.

Flutter your lashes

In addition to attentive eye care, make-up can also make your eyes sparkle. Though the eyelashes are the smallest part of the eye, they are very important in achieving beautiful eyes. Creating perfect eyelashes is no easy task. Here are some tips for perfect eyelashes from experts at LANCOME.

Before using mascara, tease out your lashes with eyelash tongs.

Then apply a curved mascara brush, and paint the lashes.

The colour of the mascara should be close to the colour of your hair, experts say. If it goes on too thick, just use your fingers to gently remove the excess mascara.

You should brush the mascara on from the root of the eyelash out to the tip while looking down.

Then, look up, and brush once more from the root of the eyelash. Remember to allow the make-up to dry a little before fluttering your lashes too much.

LANCOME experts recommend their latest range of INTENCILS mascara which come in three colours: black, brown and deep blue. The range is designed to suit wearers and non-wearers of contact lenses alike.
