YANGPU District Court recently prosecuted a man who tried to gas his wife, his lover and himself after his wife refused to agree to a divorce. The man, Chen Hao, married his wife in April 1998. Investigators told magistrates that relations between the couple had become strained soon after their marriage, and Chen moved in with his lover just after his wife gave birth to a baby girl last April. Chen asked his wife for a divorce on a number of occasions. When she refused, he bound the arms and feet of his wife with adhesive tape and gagged her. He invited his lover round by phone and also tied her up. Chen then turned on the gas. Police say tragedy was averted when the man's mother arrived and turned off the gas. In another case, proceedings were brought against a man at Yangpu District Court who was accused of stabbing his wife to death with a kitchen knife. The man's wife had wanted to divorce him.
