Shanghai to have 11 metro lines

A NETWORK of rail track including a total of 11 metro lines, seven light rail lines and three rail tracks is to be constructed in the city, according to Shanghai Urban Planning and Administration Bureau. But the bureau has not yet released details such as when the network will be completed. "It relates to the city's economic development speed," said Yu Deming, an official with the bureau. The city will focus on constructing the rail lines as an important part of public transportation in the future. Once the project is finished, the total length of the 11 metro lines will be 325.6 kilometres and the seven light rail lines will reach 136.3 kilometres. Of the 11 metro lines which will link downtown and the suburbs, Metro Line 1 which has already been put into use will be further extended from the current terminal at Shanghai Railway Station to Baoshan District in the northern part of the city. Metro Line 2 will be extended to link Hongqiao Airport to Pudong International Airport. The Pearl Light Rail Line, currently under construction, will link Minghang District in the southwest and Baoshan District in the northern part of the city. Metro Lines 4 and 5 are expected to link southwest and northeast parts of the city, Pudong New Area and downtown. The Metro Line 6 will be a comparatively short line linking the downtown area and Pudong New Area. Planners are still considering whether to extend the line further westward to Pudong International Airport. Metro lines 10 and 11 will encircle the city. To supplement the metro lines, seven light rail lines are mainly planned for urban districts. Of these, Lines A and B will facilitate convenient public transport in the four development zones in Pudong New Area.
