Tourists can stay 2 days visa-free
ALL overseas tourists who come to Shanghai via Pudong International Airport or Hongqiao International Airport may now stay for up to 48 hours without having to obtain a visa beforehand. Tourists who qualify will not have to pay any extra fees to venture into the city. The new policy became effective as of January 1, 2000. Tourists from 17 countries - including Japan, the Republic of Korea, Singapore, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Belgium, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Austria, and Greece - can stay for up to 48 hours without a visa. Visitors can also visit Shanghai's neighbouring areas such as Hangzhou and Suzhou within the two-day period. Travellers accompanied by pets, however, will be required to go through relevant quarantine procedures. Shanghai's two airports have also simplified procedures for issuing visas to official tourist groups. Visas can now be issued on site at the two airports to travel groups with authorized Shanghai-based international travel agencies consisting of five or more people. There is also a new policy on tourist visas for Shanghai residents who may now apply for a five-year passport if they have a deposit account which has had a balance of at least $4000 for a minimum of six months.
