Services to duel for eastern US
By Chen Qide

DESPITE a 0.9 per cent decrease in the composite freight index for China's export containers, some services have reported brisk business.

"Services bound for the East Coast of the US have become a focus of concern," said Liu Xiaoliang, a spokesman with the Shanghai Shipping Exchange.

China Shipping Group Company plans to open regular services bound from Asia for the US East Coast in March.

Other shipping companies will open services bound for the same destination from Shanghai in April. "The US market is expected to be the focus of intense competition," the spokesman said.

Services bound for Europe are good and at present, ships are overloaded.

He said there has been an increase in Chinese cargo exported to Europe and the Mediterranean Sea.

The Mediterranean Far East Conference has confirmed plans to raise prices on April 1 with each 20-foot container costing an additional $150 and each 40-foot container $300.

Some shipping companies are to open new services bound from Shanghai to the Mediterranean Sea.
