Violinist and conductor in limelight

LIN Chaoyang, first violin of the popular "Beijing Quartet" and Zhang Xiaoxue, a Chinese conductor living in Germany, will team up with the Shanghai Broadcasting Symphony Orchestra in a performance programme on March 4 at Shanghai Concert Hall.

The programme will include "Violin Concerto No 3" by Saint Saens, "Symphony No 1" by Brahms and works by Weber.

Lin, 32, received his music education in Shanghai and Moscow. He has held concerts in many parts of the country and in France, Britain, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Japan and Singapore.

Famous conductor and violinist Isaac Stern praised Lin as a "high-calibre young violinist" during the Beijing International Music Festival last year.

Conductor Zhang Xiaoxue received his education at the Central Conservatory in Beijing and schools in Moscow, Russia and Dresden, Germany.

He has co-operated with many orchestras in the world, including the China National Symphony Orchestra, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Moscow State Symphony Orchestra, German Jena Philharmonic, Nuernberg Symphony Orchestra and Czech Prague Symphony Orchestra.

"I have not met any other person like him who is filled with passion and sincerity even if there is only a piano on the stage," said Zhang's famous Russian mentor G. Rozhdestvensky while visiting China in 1996.
