Tunnel under river

WORK will soon begin on the fourth tunnel under the Huangpu River in Shanghai. The tunnel, nearly 3,000 metres long in total, will be put into operation in 2003. It will be an eight-lane tunnel built by Shanghai Urban Construction Group and Shanghai Waterway Bureau, involving a total investment of nearly 1.1 billion yuan ($132.8 million). The tunnel will start from Wusong Park in the west and end at Sancha Port in the east. Experts note that the construction process will be very complicated.

New flight route

SHANGHAI Airlines is preparing for regular flights from Shanghai to Phnom Penh, capital city of Cambodia. An application will be delivered to the Civil Aviation Administration of China for approval of the right to manage the air route, said Xia Benjian, an airline manager. "We predict a bright outlook for the market," Xia said. Last Friday, the airline opened its first chartered plane service from Shanghai to Phnom Penh. The route of 3,193 kilometres, takes more than four hours. "Opening direct flights will

stimulate tourism between the two cities," Xia said.

Markets rally

CHINA has over 45.32 million investors with accounts in stock exchanges, according to Shanghai Securities News. The newspaper said 5 million stock accounts were opened over the past half a year. Strong stock market rallies last week prompted a sudden increase of new accounts at the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchanges, reflecting a renewed confidence in the prospect of the Chinese economy, the report quoted analysts as saying.
