Infrastructure plans for 2000 released
By Xu Xiaomin

THE city plans to invest 280 billion yuan ($33.8 billion) this year in con-struction to improve its infrastructure.

Of the total 30 infrastructure projects which have been listed as the city's most important projects this year, the construction of Shanghai Information Port is the No 1 project, said Vice-Mayor Han Zheng at a working conference on Wednesday.

The city government will invest 774 million yuan ($93.59 million) this year in Shanghai Information Port project, which includes the intensive construction of fibre optic cable, broad band network and an information management centre.

The project is expected to substantially improve the city's communication and network equipment after its completion. It is also expected to improve the city's e-commerce and information service.

Among the 30 important projects, the construction of expressways, rail track and environmental projects account for about 60 per cent and almost the half of the total investment. They include the construction of an 80-kilometre rail track in the downtown area, over 120 kilometres of expressways in the suburban district and over 700 hectares of green space.

This year, environmental protection has been highlighted and accounts for about 33 per cent of all projects, with the investment surpassing 15 per cent for the first time, 5 per cent higher than last year. They cover the incinerators for burning refuse, planting of green land on Yan'an Road and Hongqiao Area, the treatment of pollution sources, the treatment of rivers and the use of non-polluting energy sources. The city government also promises to eliminate the black water and the bad smell of the mainstream of Suzhou Creek in this year.

The drive is also expected to promote domestic demand with some large or super-large-scale projects such as Wusong Tunnel, the second phase of the Pearl Light Rail Line and the overpass at Hongqiao Airport. These large investment projects are expected to promote the economy in the coming years
