FUNNY costumes and weird make-up, hugging, drinking and dancing. The specially decorated Crystal Ballroom of the Yangtze New World Hotel became a sea of some 400 revelling expatriates and local people on Saturday night. The sensational seven-piece German band. US EM LEVVE, flown in from Cologne, added to the festive mood and kept the audience dancing and rocking all night long till 5:30 am during the third Karneval Costume Ball Shanghai. The Shanghai Workers' Club, playing marches and carnival music, was another highlight of the revelry, along with traditional Sichuan mask drama and a Paris dance show. Trautel Hermann, wearing a straw bonnet and carrying a beautiful wicker basket, won the prize for Best Individual Costume for the night and Mr Heinz Peter Pohl and his group from Shanghai Edscha Machinery Co Ltd, dressed in galactic silver, grabbed the Best Group Costume award. The first Karneval Costume Ball was held on February 14, 1998 after Achin Wolfgarten, general manager of Zwilling JA Henckles, Jurgen Hungerbach, managing director of CMC and Peter Herweck, general manager of the Yangtze New World Hotel, met at the German Business Association and decided together it would be a good idea to hold one.
