Hounded robber gives himself up to the police
By Xu Shaofang

A MAN who robbed a karaoke bar gave himself up to police last week hoping for protection after being hounded for money by other members of the criminal underworld.

On October 6 last year, Chen Qi and Lu Shaomin, two migrant labourers from Anhui Province, rushed into a karaoke bar in Taopu Town in Putuo District.

Armed with two home-made pistols bought by Lu for 350 yuan ($42) each in his home town in Huaiyuan, Anhui Province, the two fired two shots onto the floor of the bar and began to smash up a table and a telephone.

They demanded the bar owner hand over his money.

Obediently, the bar owner surrendered all 1,300 yuan ($157) behind the bar.

The two robbers then escaped with the money, and a mobile phone and a pager they had also stolen.

Their first stop was a nearby barber's where they visited prostitutes.

Later Lu made it back to his hometown, but before Chen could do so, news spread around the underworld of the robbery.

Two groups of gangsters, one from Northeast China and one from Anhui Province, began threatening Chen to try to force him to hand over the money he had robbed.

Chen had already squandered his share of the cash, however, and so went into hiding to evade the gang members.

But before long the gangsters found Chen again.

Scared for his life, Chen decided to hand himself in to the police.

Both men were put under arrest by Putuo police last week.
