Alcatel Asia moves head office here
By Chen Qide

| Serge Tchuruk |
ALCATEL yesterday announced the setting up of its Asia-Pacific headquarters
in Shanghai, reflecting its confidence in the economic growth of the Asia
Pacific region.
"We expect Shanghai will become the third pillar of Alcatel's global
market," said Serge Tchuruk, chairman of Alcatel.
The other two pillars are the European and American markets.
"As a centre of technology for China, Shanghai will become the largest
telecommunications market in the Asia-Pacific region," Tchuruk said.
Of the company's 10,000 employees, 4,000 are concentrated in Shanghai.
The presence of this very substantial resource and technology base makes
the city the logical choice for Alcatel regional headquarters, he said.
The regional market is expected to have telecommunications sales of $330
billion by the year 2003 with the number of China's mobile phone subscribers
set to increase from 40 million at present to 115 million.
"We see China's demand for telecommunications and Internet services stimulating
dynamic growth in the region," he said.
By 2003, China will have overtaken Japan as the region's largest telecommunications
market.
"One of our primary objectives is now to replicate in Asia our successes
in Europe and the US," said Asia Pacific President Ron Spithill.
