Higher prices, larger capacity for cargo
By Chen Qide
SERVICES bound for the United States are expected to have more cargo this year thanks to the economic recovery in Asia.
The rate of increase will move from 3 per cent to 6 per cent, said Liu Xiaoliang, a spokesman with the Shanghai Shipping Exchange.
"Cargo on the Trans-Pacific services has been increasing," Liu said.
Many shipping companies have not only raised prices but also expanded their shipping capacity, he said.
"All of them want to get a bigger share from the bulging market," the spokesman said.
Kien Hung Shipping Company has decided to join Compagnie Maritime D'affretement (CMA) to provide services bound for China, Panama, Jamaica and the East Coasts of the United States.
These new services will have nine ships, each with a capacity to carry 2,500 20-foot containers, Liu said.
In addition, the North Asia Shipping Company has also decided to adjust its Pacific services and will add four ships for the new services.
Indexes for the west and east coasts of the United States were reported at 1,280.41 points and 1,432 points yesterday.
"Due to the stable economy in Europe, many shipping companies see a bright future for the European market," Liu said.
Asian shipping owners will gather for an annual meeting held in Manila on February 2 to discuss the price hike plan.
They suggested that each 20-foot container should charge additional fees of $30 to $50 within the Asian region.
