Procuratorates go all out for new year
By Lin Zhongming

MUNICIPAL procuratorates at all levels were urged to be tougher in dealing with cases of bribery and dereliction of duty in the new year at a two-day municipal procurators' conference that ended yesterday.

Chief prosecutor Wu Guangyu and municipal deputy secretary Meng Jianzhu were among those who addressed the conference.

It was revealed that municipal procuratorates handled 429 cases of corruption, bribe-taking, and embezzlement of public funds last year.

The total value involved in the crimes amounted to 304 million yuan ($36.7 million). This represented more than 50 per cent increase over last year.

The offices also handled 294 cases of dereliction of duty in State-owned enterprises in the year.

In his address to the conference, chief prosecutor Wu said embezzlement of public funds and dereliction of duty figured largely among crimes they had to deal with and they should take a tougher stance on them.

He urged a crackdown on crimes committed by officials in finance, securities markets, real estate, land leasing, and construction sectors with particular attention to large and medium-sized State-owned enterprises, especially those that cause a serious drain on State assets.

Wu also noted efforts will be made to crack down on other criminal activities to safeguard social order.

At the conference, municipal deputy party secretary Meng Jianzhu made an address, emphasizing in the new year fuller play should be given to the function of procuratorates so they can be more active in safeguarding Shanghai's social stability and economic development.
