Fire in Putu District textile market
By Zeng Min
A FIRE broke out yesterday morning in the city's largest light industry and textile products market, burning several stalls to the ground and shrouding the market in thick smoke, but there were no casualties.
The fire also caused an electricity cut in the first section of the market where sheets, quilts, bolsters, pillows and other items are on sale.
The cause is under investigation and the burnt area is off limits for business, but everything is returning to normal now, police guarding the spot told Shanghai Star.
The fire started at about 6:45 am yesterday on the floor of the first section of Shanghai Light and Textile Products Market, located in Putuo District in the north of the city. The left side of the four-storey market was affected by the fire. The second section on the right side of the complex which sells garments, bags and other light industry products is now open for business as usual.
Firefighters rushed to the scene about 10 minutes after receiving an emergency call at 6:50 am from a retailer in the market. The fire was put out at about 8:00 am, according to firefighters on the spot.
"The fire wasn't a serious one, it just destroyed the products of three to four stalls on the first floor, the damage should not amount to much," a manager of the market told Shanghai Star.
