Transportation ready for peak holiday exodus A NEW record of 6.54 million people, 1.5 per cent more than last year, will be travelling in and out of Shanghai by public transport during the Spring Festival period (January 21 to February 29) this year. Railway passengers will number 3.74 million while 1 million will travel by ship, more than 860,000 by air and about 800,000 by road. Statistics indicate 2.5 million farmers and business people from other provinces are now working in Shanghai and half of them will return home for the festival. "Traffic will become heavier as 100,000 college students leave Shanghai for home," said Qian Yunlong, director of the Shanghai Transportation Office. The Shanghai Railway Bureau has laid on 70 extra trains to help accommodate the numbers. Deputy Director Zhang Chunxin said the bureau has completed its timetable. During the Spring Festival period, trains are expected to carry 20 million passengers in the East China region, Zhang said. Trains from Shanghai to Nanjing will run once every 20 minutes and trains to Hangzhou depart once every 30 minutes. The bureau will open special booking offices for students and farm workers. Qian said the city will use 7,482 coaches to transport passengers and 100 coaches will be prepared for emergency use. "If needed, spare coaches can reach the spot within two hours," he said. The director has asked coach departments to open special coaches for groups of farmers leaving Shanghai for home. "But measures will be taken to bring over-loaded coaches under control," he said. At present, China Eastern Airlines and Shanghai Airlines have 81 aircraft, but this is insufficient. The city will rent more planes from foreign airlines to help transport passengers during the peak season, Qian said. Pudong International Airport will handle 64 flights daily for more than 4,000 passengers. (Star News) Copyright 2000 by Shanghai Star. All rights reserved. |
