Zinc can reduce child pneumonia, diarrhoea WASHINGTON -- Zinc supplements can prevent children from contracting diarrhoea and pneumonia, the two leading causes of death among the young in developing countries, researchers reported recently. Robert Black and Sunil Sazawal, of the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health in Baltimore, suggested in the Journal of Paediatrics lives could be saved by giving children zinc tablets or by adding zinc to basic foods such as bread. Black and Sazawal analyzed 10 different studies on zinc supplements and found that adding the mineral to a child's diet for as short a period as two weeks could reduce pneumonia episodes by 41 per cent and diarrhoea by 25 per cent. "This effect is greater than that estimated for any other intervention to prevent pneumonia," they wrote in their report in the journal. (Agencies via Xinhua) Copyright 1999 by Shanghai Star.
