Man jailed for killing baby girl
By Feng Xuedong

A 21-YEAR-OLD man was recently arrested for strangling his infant daughter just after his girlfriend gave birth to the infant, according to Yangpu District Procuratorate.

The man, Yu Daojie, from Wuwei County, East China's Anhui Province, met his girlfriend in August 1997. In early 1998, Yu came to Shanghai where he was employed by a restaurant as a chef.

Not long after Yu was joined by a woman surnamed Ai in December 1998, Ai became pregnant. As they were still unprepared for the arrival of a child, Yu decided to persuade Ai to have the child aborted, but abandoned the idea after learning of the expenditure involved in abortion.

Skimming through books, he hit upon the idea of helping Ai deliver the child himself. He was confident he could serve as a qualified midwife after reading the books.

On the evening of August 29, last year when Yu returned home he was startled to find Ai groaning in bed, apparently experiencing labour pains.

Yu, completely at a loss as what to do, nevertheless managed to deliver the child using just a kitchen knife.

The child came into the world with a loud cry, a perfectly normal phenomenon, which worried Yu who covered the baby's mouth with his hands, injuring the infant.

He found the child had difficulty in breathing, and fearing the huge medical expenses that might ensue from this condition, he decided to put an end to the infant's life with a piece of electric wire.

After killing the infant, he dumped its corpse into a dustbin.
