Jaywalkers arrested for violence

A TOTAL of eight jaywalkers who used violence against traffic police have been detained recently. These people are among the first to be arrested on such grounds though a lot of traffic police have been victim to verbal or physical abuse since a campaign targeting jaywalkers was launched last September. Among those arrested was Xia Zhengbiao from Anhui Province who tried to cross the road on a red light on December 2 last year. Traffic co-ordinator Shen Jikun intervened and handed Xia over to policeman, Shan Qiaobin, for punishment. Routine punishment for such offences carries a five-yuan ($0.60) fine. Police officer Shan happened to be busy handling another incident so he asked Xia to wait for a few minutes. Xia, getting impatient, flew off the handle, directing a torrent of abuse at Shan. When Shan decided to report the incident to his superiors, Xia tried to deprive the officer of his walkie-talkie. Xia was marched to a police car, but turned and suddenly slapped the officer on his face. When Shan tried to prevent him, Xia punched him. Later at the police station, Xia again attacked Shan. Other policemen intervened and with combined efforts Xia was subdued.
