Baby sun bear born on New Year
The baby animal, a female with a round body and light-dark hair, weighs
about 250 grams and is kept in a quiet cage, nestled beside her mother. The mother sun bear from Yunnan Province who already has six young is
taking great care of her new cub. Each day she feeds her more than 10
times and hugs her all the time. "She ignores everything outside except her baby and keeps people away
from her baby," said Wang Aichan, who looks after the zoo's birds. The sun bear is the smallest in the bear family. "This kind of bear is
nimble enough to climb trees. So long as the branch can hold his weight,
he can climb trees as high as he wishes," said Wang. Now decreasing in number, sun bears were listed in the Convention on
International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). "They are popular with visitors. In three to four months, baby sun bears
are old enough to meet visitors," he said. To date, Shanghai Zoo boasts 602 sorts of creatures, including 724 beasts
of prey and 1,271 amphibians and reptiles. "We've introduced new species from many countries, such as red-necked
wallaby from Australia and maned wolf from Brazil," said Li Zhongkui,
chief of the Feed Department. According to the animals' different habits and characteristics, the zoo
provides them with various services and feed. Statistics show that Shanghai Zoo spends about 3 million yuan ($360,000)
every year on food for animals, about 10,000 yuan ($1,200) every day. In 1999, 314 birds and 103 beasts were born in Shanghai Zoo. Giraffes, Hippopotami, De Brazza's Monkeys and the American Bison listed
in the CITES, all successfully gave birth to young, Wang said. Copyright 1999 by Shanghai Star. All rights reserved. |
