Marijuana Marijuana or marihuana is a drug obtained from the flowering tops, stems, and leaves of the hemp plant (cannabis sativa). Typically, small doses result in a feeling of well-being. The intoxication lasts two to three hours but accompanying effects on motor control last much longer. High doses can cause tachycardia, paranoia, and delusions. Cocaine Cocaine is an alkaloid derived from the leaves of the coca plant. It is either snorted (sniffed), swallowed, injected, or smoked. Habitual snorting can result in serious damage to the nasal mucous membranes; shared needles put the user at increased risk of HIV infection. Heroin Heroin (diacetylmorphine) is a powerful opiate analgesic derived from morphine. It is usually injected intravenously but may also be injected intramuscularly or under the skin, smoked, or sniffed; effects last three to six hours. It is a central nervous system depressant that relieves pain and induces sleep. It produces a dreamlike state of warmth and well-being. It may also cause constricted pupils, nausea, respiratory depression and even death. Opium Opium is a drug extracted from the opium poppy. Opium users describe experiencing a feeling of calm and well-being. Their preoccupation with the drug and its acquisition can lead to malnutrition and poor self-care and an increased risk of disease. Morphine Morphine (formerly called morphia) is the principal derivative of opium. It is the juice of the unripe seed pods of the opium poppy and is an opium alkaloid used to treat severe pain. Small doses first excite the mental faculties and then produce sleep. Excessive doses lead to coma and respiratory failure. (Star News) |
