THE Hong-Kong based pop star Kenny Bee (Chung Chun-To), will reappear on the stage for the first time in years to present many of his hits from the 1980s. Kenny Bee's performance is only one part of the Super Show series featuring stars who achieved fame in the late 1970s and 1980s, including Long Piao Piao, Pan Yue-yun and Chiang Yue-heng. The organizers revealed that Kenny Bee's concert will mainly highlight Mandarin blockbusters such as "Zhiyao Ni Guode Biwohao"(translated as "Only If You Lead a Better Life than I") and "Huiyi" ("Memories") as well as the English "Wishing You Joy". During the concert, Kenny Bee will also perform the Cantonese song "Sishui Liunian" ("Fleeting Time Like Water") as a tribute to Anita Mui, the Hong Kong Queen of Pop or so-called "Madonna of Asia" who passed away last December after a battle with cancer. The same song is the theme for the name-sake film casting Mui and Kenny Bee, which has also won wide acclamation from both critics and fans. Some insiders point out that although Kenny Bee has divorced his former spendthrift wife, indebted up to her neck (owing HK$2,500 million), he is still suffering from the aftermath of bankruptcy. That is the main reason he is returning to the stage to perform again. David Xu, one of Bee's fans, said, "We fans are in a dilemma. We do not want to see our idols suffering financial troubles, however, if they do not, they be less likely to give performances and refuse to dedicate themselves to performing whole-heartedly." Xu added that the best way to support Kenny Bee was to buy tickets for his concerts, saying: "Maybe it will only help him a little, but after all, we fans try our best to show our support." Kenny Bee, in most people's minds, is regarded as a film star and their earliest impression of Bee probably come from the romantic films based on Taiwan writer Qiong Yao's novels. But Bee actually had his big break as a star as a member of The Wynners, the Hong Kong-based premier rock band of the 1970s, rather than as an actor. Thanks to their upbeat style, charm and good looks, The Wynners won a large number of fans in Asia. Later Bee and fellow band members such as Alan Tam and Anthony Chan made full use of their popularity as musicians to enter the film business. 7:00pm-9:00pm, 9:30pm-11:30pm, February 2-8 Shanghai Lyceum Theatre 57 Maoming Nanlu Tel: 6253-0788, 6256-5544 180-580 yuan |
