IT's estimated that 177 students have lost their lives in campus fire accidents in Russia during the past five years. In China, fire accidents are also a menace to college safety.

?August 25, 2001, a fire in Shandong University burnt down an entire highrise inside the school that was nearly 100 years old.

?November 14, 2001, a new dining hall in Nanjing University was totally destroyed.

?December, 2001, six dorm rooms in Peking University were incinerated.

?December 17, 2001, a dorm building for graduate students in Sichuan University caught fire and all the students' possessions were burnt.

?March 11, 2002, the same tragedy happened in a dorm building attached to the Physics Department in Peking University

?November 6, 2002, many students were trapped in a burning building at Xi'an Union University because they lacked fire escape skills, although they were ultimately rescued. (Star News)
