Shanghai Star. 2003-12-04 By Inga Noeckel Traditional Chinese Medicine found its way to Europe a long time ago. Perhaps with the first tea ships or silk traders, medical knowledge was also delivered. But until now it has not been generally accepted by most of the peoples of Europe. When we think about Chinese medicine, there is always a touch of magical power or mysterious treatment included. The sight of Chinese acupuncture, in particular, still gives me the creeps. Nevertheless I decided to get a Chinese massage to experience one part of the traditional medicine treatment in China. I went to a massage place in Pudong and asked what was on offer. I was given a long list and did not understand the diversity because of my poor Chinese. Eventually, I made up my mind to get one of the foot massages. The whole procedure started with a footbath in nicely scented herbs. I looked forward to the moment of put my feet into the bath. But as fast as my big toe entered the water it was out again. The water was hot, possibly scalding, but definitely not for my sensitive feet. I had to ask for some cold water. From the reaction of my masseur I noticed that not many other people had asked for this before. At this point I did not know that a Chinese massage is not advisable for sensitive people with sensitive feet. Thus, the washing is harmless compared to the actual treatment. People say that in the sole of the foot are certain zones, which have a connection, or more exactly a reflex path, to other parts of the body. The sole seems to be a map of all the different human organs. Also although it was difficult for me to imagine, I was really fascinated and wanted to notice if my lungs or heart had been treated. To be honest It was difficult to tell because every single touch tickled my foot so that I started smiling. I really had to control myself so as not to laugh out loud. At least the masseuse enjoyed my friendly face as a way of telling him I liked the treatment. Every part of the feet were massaged. I had never ever given my feet so much attention before. Also I did not know that between the toes there is enough space to massage. After the 60 minutes treatment I had a funny feeling in my feet. On the one hand, it was a bit painful, as if somebody had squeezed the skin too much. On the other hand, my feet felt light and seemed to fly when I walked out of the store. Finally, I can say there is still a mysterious feeling around Chinese medicine. I do not know how the massage helped me, when I was trying so hard not to laugh. I hope I can relax more next time in order to understand my body reflex connections and to enjoy the whole treatment. starcomment@yahoo.com |
