Shanghai Star. 2003-10-23

Abstract art

This is the third annual Abstract Art exhibition to be held at the Shanghai Art Museum. Forty works by 21 Chinese artists from home and abroad are on display. Exhibits include oil paintings, water-ink work and installation projects. Visitors can gain an overview of the trends in abstract art over the past two years.

Lascivious blossoms

Wang Xiaohui, one of the best-known contemporary women photographers in China, displays her new series of work, "The Eros of Flowers", at the Shanghai Art Museum. A large installation made of 5,000 lotus seedpods by Wang is exhibited at the same time.

Colourful notes

Jin G Kam is from Zhejiang and worked as an art teacher at Shanghai University but established his artistic reputation in the US. Kam is known for portraying celebrated musicians such as Bernstein, Louis Armstrong, Yoyo Ma, and Karajan. Over 30 of his paintings are on exhibition in the Shanghai Grand Theatre Gallery.

Old Shanghai

Pictures of Shanghai in the 1920s and 1930s are on exhibition in the Unique Hill Studio. Visitors can see the international buildings on the bund along Yan'an Donglu, naval vessels on the Huangpu River, planes flying in the sky and the peace monument for WWI.

Pastorale

Artist Cui Kaixi is a countryboy-turned-soldier-turned-artist. After graduating from the Central Academy of Fine Arts, he engaged in oil painting with revolutionary themes, depicting the Long March and revolutionary leaders. In recent years, his painting turned to rural scenes and folk culture, gaining recognition from critics at home and abroad. His recent works are on exhibition in Shengling Gallery.

Childhood dreams

Watercolour works by Yang Bin are on exhibition. Yang recalls the countryside scenes where he and his friends enjoyed their childhood fun and games. Yang hopes to preserve these scenes from childhood with his paintbrush.

Faces of our time

South Korean artist Lim Young-kyum strives for an objective portrayal of Korea, devoid of moralizing or sentimentality. Lim aims to probe into Korean national identity through realistic photography.

Bai Qu

Bai Qu was born in Shanghai in the 1940s and later lived in Singapore. He studied Chinese painting from his childhood and Western painting at 16. Bai combines Chinese art with Western painting techniques to find a unique artistic identity.

Abstract Feng Feng

The central direction of Feng Feng's visual work manifests in planes of bold, raw colour, upon which he delves into three-dimensional reliefs. Feng Feng employs a technique which serves to consolidate a historical and cultural legacy: the primordial use of colour, the dense near sculptural applications of paint and mixed media attest to an emphatic employment of Chinese traditions.

Southwest China scenes

Rao Xiangping from Guizhou and Chen Xiongxun from Yunnan are both good at depicting the life and folk culture of Southwest China. Rao focuses vividly on the national costumes and silver accessories, while Chen depicts folk legends in bright colours.

Qiu Jiongjiong

Qiu Jiongjiong's solo exhibition is the first to be held at Art Scene Warehouse's beautifully renovated 1,800 square metre warehouse space at Suzhou Creek. Qiu has emerged as a unique and talented voice in the field of contemporary art in China. The artist's personal curiosity about the great tales of history, of whatever origin, has broken the confines which have served to restrain many of his generation. Qiu draws freely and liberally from sources as diverse as the ancient classics of Greece and Rome, as well as those of his native China, as inspiration for his artwork.

Calligraphy painting

Artist Lao Fan's new series is on exhibition. He paints Chinese calligraphy on hand-made paper and combines it with collage. The work is a dialogue between traditional art and modern expression, as well as a unity of time and space.

Wine school

Montrose Wine School is a monthly classroom-style wine teaching and tasting event, taught in Chinese, which will be held from 3:00- 5:00pm on the 3rd Saturday of each month. Sam Featherstone, general manager of Montrose Shanghai, will deliver the speech. A single course costs 100 yuan entrance fee per person. For the whole set, a 15 per cent discount is offered.

California food and wine

In conjunction with the California Wine Institute's first China promotion, The St. Regis Shanghai presents the Californian Food and Wine Festival from October 23 to November 9. Guest Chef Greg Cole, who hails from California brings his general culinary expertise as well as his speciality creations: Global Comfort Food. According to Cole, Global Comfort Food is meant to be food from different cultures and cuisines that warms the soul and lifts the spirit. Device exhibition

PSC 2003, an international exhibition of pumps, valves and piping equipment, is being held in the city with more than 300 companies from 40 countries and regions attending. Germany, South Korea and the United States have organized delegations to the exhibition, which is sponsored by Singapore HQ Link Pte. Ltd. Held on a biennial basis, the exhibition applies a unique "9 in 1 concept", with nine exhibitions hosted simultaneously.
