ON the leafy Dongping Lu off the elegant Hengshan Lu there are several houses belonging to the Middle School of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, which were the former residences of Chiang Kai-shek and his brother-in-law T.V. Soong. Simply Thai is just located in one of these houses. The Thai restaurant is a place that brings customers back with its flavourful and savoury dishes. Richard Lim, co-owner of Simply Thai, said that members of the Thai Consulate General are often found dining there and once they even had the honour to serve Princess Chulabhorn at the establishment.
Sitting in the restaurant, I found myself in a homey and stylish ambiance. The restaurant had worked hard to conjure up vivid images of Thailand in every detail from the artwork and carvings adorning the green and maroon walls to the incense wafting through the air. It was noon and Lim helped me order my meal. The Pho Phiat Thod for 22 yuan are Thai style spring rolls, stuffed with bean starch, vermicelli and tomato. It is a delightful appetizer. Masman Neur for 25 yuan is rich beef curry soup served here with peanuts. Lim, a Singaporean, explained that in Southeast Asia, peanuts are an important ingredient. I never imagined that beef and peanuts would match so well. We also enjoyed sauteed vegetables with crispy pork. It goes well with fragrant Thai rice, which is offered free of charge during lunchtime. Lim said the average cost of lunch is 60 yuan per person and the cost for dinner is about 150 yuan per person. Signature dishes at Simply Thai, include Tom Yam Seafood Soup, Thai Green Curry and Red Curry and Thai Fish Cakes - things I intend to enjoy next time. Simply Thai 5C Dongping Lu Tel: 6445-9551 |
